On January 15, 2021, the Department of Labor (DOL) awarded 19 grants totaling $145 million to public-private partnerships for the H-1B One Workforce Grant program. The intent of this grant is to help develop the workforce for Information Technology careers in awarded areas, like the state of Connecticut. In a partnership with all Workforce Development Boards led by Capital Workforce Group (Hartford), the CT WHISP grant provides financial aide and free training for most Information Technology training at different schools or training centers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many education and training providers and employers to rethink how to deliver training. In addition to an innovative mix of training strategies, you can expect to participate in online, distance, and other technology-enabled learning.

There’s also a variety of ways that you can expect to gain skills in this industry including on the job training, classroom training, online tutorials and extra practice through some skills portals available online.

IT credentials include technical certifications in diverse tools such as Javascript, HTML5, CSS, C++, Python, Tableau, Microsoft, Salesforce, and SQL – which are all a great starting point (in addition to soft skills) for those looking to get into the field. With the chance to learn on site and work up to these credentials, students should feel ready to get certified.

Google Analytics and Amazon Web Services also offer credentials that students can stack to build their resume. They both offer special certifications for different fields, such as cloud computing, cyber security, coding and troubleshooting just to name a few.
